Someone else will respond to the dim color and see it as blue. A recent picture of a colored dress became an Internet sensation because people are divided into two distinct camps—one sees blue and black and the other sees white and gold. This phenomenon brought the complexity and variation in perception to everyone’s attention. There are, in fact, many ways that perceptions are quite different for various individuals. A unique convergence of complex factors allowed people to experience first hand that we do not all perceive the same way. Most consider that that they are seeing “reality” with our eyes and other senses.
Some experts believe that the dress illusion occurs because of the way our brains process color. There is no one definitive answer to the question of what the “real” color of the illusion dress is. It depends on the specific dress, and on the lighting and angle at which it is viewed. However, it is generally agreed that the colors of illusion dresses appear different in photographs than they do in person.

Recent studies show that when the visual information reaches the cortex, there are a variety of ways that the information is processed. One is very similar to the compression protocols used in computers to make the large amount of video information easy to process.
If you think the dress is in shadow, your brain may remove the blue cast and perceive the dress as being white and gold. "We discovered a novel property of color perception and constancy, involving how we experience shades of blue versus yellow," the researchers wrote in the study. Those who originally saw The Dress as blue and black should not be too smug, though. Some may argue that colour itself is just a construct imposed by the brain to make sense of the world.

But, in fact, we are seeing a construction of our mind based on many different factors, most prominently expectation. Our brains are the most amazing supercomputers that exist. They are constantly computing information to help us perceive the world.
This emotional filter responds very rapidly to perceived threats, such as someone about to throw a punch. The flinch occurs so rapidly, there is no time for cortex analysis. These circuits are sent very rapidly to the much closer emotional centers for a rapid reflex. While remarkable progress has been made in defining the very detailed structure of the visual system, in fact, understanding how we see has proven to be very complex. The human visual system’s limitations start with a very narrow bandwidth in the electromagnetic spectrum.

Some people see it as gold and white while others perceive it as blue and black. Since then, there is no explanation why people see “the dress” differently because no one had any idea about why and what is the true color. If someone sees blue and black, their cones are very sensitive – eyes do subtractive mixing. If someone sees white and gold, eyes aren’t working as well in dim light and so they see white. They are less light sensitive causing additive mixing of green and red to make gold. Cones don’t see dim light well and in that situation the rods will see the dress as white.
What a marvelous moment it was for me to realize no one was really “right or wrong”…. But experiencing it and seeing the white and gold as well, was eye opening. If you see white and gold your eyes don’t work very well in dim light so the retina rods see white making them less light sensitive which causes “addictive mixing” of green and red which make gold. At the same time, the way the dress is captured on camera could also be playing a significant role in this debate.
“However, artificial light tends to be yellowish, so if we see it brightened in this fashion, we factor out this color, leaving us with a dress that we see as black and blue. It has been observed that the dress appears to be gold and white in a cool shadow and blue and black under a bright and warm light. You will see it one way or the other which will depend on how your brain will interpret the ambiguous cues in the picture.
Simply put, objects appear the same colour even if the light illuminating them changes – a concept known as colour constancy. The “illusion dress” is a dress that appears to be one color when seen in person, but looks like a different color when seen in photographs. The most famous example of this is the “blue and black” dress that went viral in 2015. The dress was actually a blue and gold color, but appeared black and blue in photographs. The experts in the Wired article don’t come to a consensus on color, although they do agree that the dress is definitely not white. Other investigators turned to Photoshop and Adobe to make definitive claims about the dress’s color.
